London Road salon, Twisty’s, specialise in vintage hair pin-ups and beauty treatments. The Family run business is owned by Carol Silcock, who employs daughter Bianca, sisterin-law Jackie and granddaughters Sophie and Elle.
Carol, who has been in hairdressing for more than 50 years, is the vintage hair specialist and can create any look from a victory roll to a beehive bouffant. “My friends think I’m crazy” said Carol. “They’ve all retired now but I’m not ready to put down the styling tools just yet – I enjoy it too much. “I never expected by granddaughters to want to follow in my footsteps either – but now they have and I want to train them up so the business can one day be theirs.”
The salon attracts a mix of clients – from young fashionistas to working-mums and grans. Twisty’s also caters for Asian clients who require discretion due to religious purposes – often styling hair behind a screen to protect Asian ladies from revealing their hair in public. “We don’t have the swankiest salon with pretentious stylists who can only specialise in one aspect of hairdressing such as just colouring or cutting; but a good old family run business with three generations working together across all aspects of the business” added Bianca.
“It’s also not the biggest salon, in fact it’s tiny but the beauty of Twisty’s is the experience and how it makes you feel when you’re there; some say it’s like a female version of Desmond’s! “My mum has made Twisty’s a sanctuary for all age groups and people from all sorts of backgrounds who just want a great hairstyle with a lovely cuppa but not have to pay a ridiculous amount for the privilege.”Twisty’s has recently installed a lash and brow station where beautician Elle offers semipermanent eyelashes, tinting and HD brows. The salon also has a nail bar, where Jackie offers manicures, pedicures and gels.
