FOOD: Cafe Naaz

Café Naaz isn’t your average Indian restaurant. Based in Wath-upon-Dearne, this purpose built venue offers a fresh, modern approach to South Asian dining.

Walk through the doors of this stone built property in to a contemporary furnished restaurant and bar. We’re immediately greeted by the welcoming owner Naaz (hence the venue name) who takes us to our table overlooking the town centre.

Formally a chef himself, Naaz has personally created the menu which features a selection of traditional classic dishes amongst his own creations.

Poppadums and a pickle tray arrive as an appetiser while Naaz offers his recommendations.

To start I opt for the King Prawn Tandoori, £4.50 – king size prawns marinated in a specially prepared sauce and cooked in Tandoor, served with salad. My dining partner ordered the Onion Bhaji, £2.70 – chopped onions, gram flour and spices, fried and served with salad. It’s up there as one of the best bhajis I’ve ever tried.

For main, I opt for Kagazie Murgh, £10.90 – marinated chicken breast cooked the Hinalayon way served with delicate spinach and roast garlic puree. Created by Naaz, this is the only restaurant serving the dish in South Yorkshire. It arrives at the table served in a ballooned foil case. It looks as impressive as it tastes.

My dining partner ordered the Naaz Special, £10.90 – pieces of chicken cooked in Tandoor, marinated with honey mangoes and delicate aromatic herbs and spices for a mild and sweet finish.

To accompany we order a pilau rice and a spiced naan bread – which actually tastes a little like pizza.

We’re full, but if you do have the appetite then be sure to take a look at the dessert menu – next time, I think I’ll leave enough room for a coffee and a half coconut filled with ice cream.
