Gone are the days of hidden kitchens, tucked away at the back of restaurants.
The head chef is the first person I see as I wander into the glass fronted Gyoza Bar – one of the latest additions to Covent Garden’s long list of eateries.
I love the reverse concept. Why wouldn’t you want to see your food being freshly prepared?
We grab a bench at the back of the restaurant – I’m impressed at how full the venue is for the newbie in town.
My eyes wander the paper menu and I tick each dish which makes my mouth water. The waiter offers his recommendations and we agree – the new beef yakimono dish does sound irresistible.
Take your pick from a main course or small plates to share – like Japanese tapas.
Gyoza, ramen, bao buns – all cooked fresh to order using traditional recipes.
But leave room for dessert – fried ice cream is a must-have.
