The best of British burgers
Urban 1/4, 1B Kelham Island, Sheffield (0114) 453 9239 http://www.urbanquarter.co
Towering burgers tucked under mounds of meat in brioche buns; classic cocktails served in retro glass milk bottles; warm home-made doughnuts tucked in mesh baskets – my mouth melts at the dishes whizzing by us as we step in to Kelham Island’s latest kitchen, Urban ¼.
The venue has a cool, chic vibe – In keeping with its industrial surroundings. Décor is simplistic – exposed brickwork with reclaimed chandeliers compliment the spaciously arranged crafted wooden tables. It’s effortlessly stylish.
The menu is simple too. But the ingredients are quality.
Urban ¼ serves up only the best of British burgers – chicken, beef or veggie. That’s your lot.
Build your own, try a special, then add a side – urban slaw, onion strings, rosemary chips, pickled vegetables or a mixed leaf salad. Burgers start from £7.50 up to £8.75. Feeling hungry? Add an extra beef patty for £3.
I opted for the chicken burger served with rosemary chips and urban sauce (a secret recipe we’d love to get our hands on). My partner ordered the owner’s recommendation – the urban special. We watch them cooking in the open kitchen and they arrive promptly. They’re juicy and the beef is cooked to a perfect pink – just how it should be.
To wash it down, we ordered a refreshing Draught Stancill Pilsner – a locally brewed Sheffield lager (£4); and a Green City mocktail – cucumber, thyme, apple juice and lemonade (£3.50).
The portions are manageable but leave a little room for dessert. I order what I suspect could be the healthier option – a toasted marshmallow (£2.50). I was wrong. This giant mallow with an Oreo crumb is over-spilling on the slate plate it arrives on. My partner ordered the jam doughnut (£2.50) – warm, soft, coated in a crunchy sugar and filled with home-made jam.
A bold statement, but Urban Quarter could well be the best place for burgers in Sheffield! We’ll be back soon!
